Dorothy Parsons

Dorothy Parsons

Dorothy is in the modern track and has a BA in International Affairs from Skidmore College. Prior to joining CMES, she worked as the Correspondence and Grants Coordinator for a U.S. Senate office and also was the vice president of a community garden serving New Americans and refugees.  While graduate school is an opportunity for her to explore and narrow her research interests, she has studied nationalism and ethnic-religious minorities in Egypt and France, the failure of foreign intervention for regime change in MENA, and the impact of conflict on trust in government in Lebanon and Tunisia. She plans to continue in public service hopefully improving U.S. foreign policy and/or working with Arab and Muslim populations. She once slept on the floor of a hotel lobby in Chicago and has not been back since. Contact Dorothy at

Hannah Kim

Hannah Kim

Hannah is from Oberlin, OH and is on the modern CMES track. She completed her BA in History at Oberlin College with a minor in Politics and International Studies. Before coming to the University of Chicago, she worked as a baker in Boston, MA. Her academic interests are in the social, political, and economic development of modern Turkey. Her research focuses on the ways in which labor participation in state enterprises contributed to the development of a distinctly “Turkish” national identity, particularly in the Black Sea Region. Hannah plays the cello, desperately wants a real garden, and enjoys cooking and baking in her free time. She hopes to work at a think tank or in public service in the future.
